Students in grades 9-10 are invited to apply for Youth Leadership Charlotte-Mecklenburg Class of 2018. The GenerationNation program enables high school students to collaborate over a semester to learn how the community works, meet students from different schools and backgrounds, and develop knowledge and skills needed by a new generation of Charlotte-Mecklenburg civic leaders.
2018 marks the 4th year the innovative youth civic leadership academy is being offered. Participants meet approximately twice a month January-May 2018 with peers and community leaders to learn about the community’s history and growth, explore the city and its successes and challenges, and join a growing network of emerging student civic leaders. After completing YLCM, participants will continue their civic leadership as active leaders in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council.
Charlotte nonprofit GenerationNation develops a new generation of civic leaders. GenerationNation programs - including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council, Youth Lead Charlotte-Mecklenburg, “Kids Voting” student election, K-12 civic literacy curriculum, teacher civic leadership development, and other initiatives - connect classroom education with hands-on experiences that help students to learn first-hand how the community works, explore civic issues and different points of view, know how to intelligently use news and information, and join a diverse network of informed and engaged civic problem-solvers. GenerationNation, launched in 1992 as an annual election event called Kids Voting, now works year-round to educate and engage K-12 students to become a new generation of civic leaders.
