Jalen Lowery, a junior at Hawthorne Academy of Health Sciences, has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) Council on Youth, Education, and Families (YEF). The YEF Council guides and oversees the YEF Institute's work.
As a member of the national YEF Council, Jalen will serve with local elected officials and youth members from across the U.S. as well as representatives from national children- and youth-serving organizations. Jalen will join discussions involving NLC policies impacting youth, education, and families such as early childhood education, health and wellness, out-of-school time programs, youth violence prevention, and economic opportunity.
Jalen is the first Charlotte-Mecklenburg area student to be selected to the Council. He is a vice president of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council (CMYC) and chairs the youth council’s CMPD committee. Jalen served with 5 Charlotte-Mecklenburg youth on a national team that planned and lead youth programming for the 2017 NLC City Summit in Charlotte. In 2018, Jalen and CMYC members will help to plan and lead NLC youth programming, and will represent youth from Charlotte and Mecklenburg towns at the NLC Congressional City Conference and NLC City Summit.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council is the official youth advisory council for the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. CMYC, a 21st century youth council, is an innovative partnership between youth, local governments, schools, and K-12 civic leadership education champion GenerationNation.
CMYC members serve as a voice for youth in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area; learn how to solve civic challenges; advise community leaders on youth-identified issues including education, opportunity, and community safety; and join a diverse network of young civic leaders. CMYC, a program of Charlotte’s GenerationNation, serves high school students in Charlotte, Mecklenburg towns, and surrounding areas.
